Ethiopia eVisa Eligible Countries — Who Can Apply in 2026

Ethiopia eVisa Eligible Countries — Who Can Apply in 2026

Who Can Apply for the Ethiopia eVisa?

The Ethiopia eVisa (Tourist Visa – VT) is available to citizens of all countries worldwide. There are no nationality restrictions for the online tourist visa — this makes Ethiopia one of Africa’s most open destinations in 2026. Whether you hold an American, British, Indian, Chinese, Brazilian, or any other nationality’s passport, you can apply directly through evisa.gov.et.

However, “eligible to apply” does not mean automatic approval. All applications are reviewed by the Ethiopian Immigration and Citizenship Service. Citizens of certain countries may face additional scrutiny. Additionally, nationals of Cuba, Iraq, Sudan, Yemen, Somalia, North Korea, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Crimea (Ukraine), and Syria face payment restrictions — they cannot pay by credit card and must arrange alternative payment methods.

Three Categories of Entry for Ethiopia

Ethiopia organizes foreign national entry into three broad categories in 2026:

1. Visa-Free Entry (No Visa Required)

Only two countries currently enjoy visa-free access to Ethiopia:

  • Kenya
  • Djibouti

Citizens of Kenya and Djibouti can enter Ethiopia with only a valid passport — no visa of any kind is required. This is based on bilateral agreements between these East African neighbors.

2. Visa on Arrival Eligible Countries

Ethiopia offers a Visa on Arrival (VoA) service at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport for citizens of the following countries (partial list from the official evisa.gov.et portal):

Algeria, Angola, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, UAE, UK, USA, and more.

Citizens of these countries can obtain their visa upon landing at ADD airport. However, applying for an eVisa online in advance is generally recommended to avoid airport queues. Compare your options on our eVisa vs. Visa on Arrival page.

3. eVisa Required (All Other Countries)

Citizens of all other countries — those not listed for Visa on Arrival and not Kenya/Djibouti — must apply for an eVisa online before travel. The online Tourist eVisa (VT) is available to all nationalities, so there is no country that cannot enter Ethiopia legally through the eVisa system.

Special Cases and Restrictions

While all nationalities can technically apply, some situations create complications:

  • Payment restrictions: Citizens of Cuba, Iraq, Sudan, Yemen, Somalia, North Korea, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Crimea, and Syria cannot use credit cards for payment on evisa.gov.et (effective November 18, 2020). These travelers should contact the Ethiopian Immigration and Citizenship Service for alternative arrangements.
  • Multiple nationalities: If you hold more than one passport, you must choose the nationality/passport you intend to travel with and apply accordingly.
  • Israeli passport holders: Israeli citizens are currently on the Visa on Arrival list, meaning they can apply online or obtain a visa at the airport.
  • Diplomatic and official passport holders: May have different entry conditions based on bilateral agreements — check with the Ethiopian Embassy in your country.

eVisa Eligibility for US, UK, and EU Citizens

Citizens from major Western countries are among the most frequent Ethiopia visitors and all qualify for both the eVisa and Visa on Arrival:

How to Check Your Eligibility

The simplest way to confirm your eligibility and the right visa category is to visit evisa.gov.et and begin an application. The system will prompt you to select your nationality and visa type, and it will guide you through eligibility automatically. If you encounter any issues, the Ethiopian Immigration and Citizenship Service helpdesk can be contacted through the official portal.
